The Fire Brigade is to get a new first class training school in Twickenham Park in St. Catherine.
This was revealed by State Minister with special responsibility for Local Government Reform, Hon. Robert Montague when he opened the new Falmouth state-of-the-art Fire Station and Emergency Medical Centre on Monday.
The minister said that $1 million has been approved for site cleaning and fencing of the facility. Although not being very conclusive he noted that the school will be complete for the next batch of graduates which should be within a year. The cost of the school was not given.
Mr. Montague boasted that the $120 million fire station which was opened is the most modern in the Caribbean and begged that if he should visit next year it should be just the same.
Opposition Leader, Portia Simpson-Miller, who was also in attendance and under whose tenure the station was conceived and built, was elated. She thanked the fire-fighters for their endurance in an ill convenient facility while the station was being built.
While the politician from both major parties were very cordial and even dished out praise across the political divide to each other, their supports were much undignified.
The former prime minister praised the Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Jonathan Bartley, for his support of the venture while Mr. Montague praised the previous administration, saying the building of the station was good and anything good from the pervious administration would be built upon.
Supporters of both parties however came out in their party colours and were most unruly. Rival supporters heckled the other party officials while applauding theirs own with both pointing fingers at the other. The PNP however had more supporters therefore they came away with the more disorderly bragging rights.
The function was chaired by the Fire Brigade Public Relations Officer, District Officer Emelo Ebanks. Some others in attendance were: Custos Rotulorum for Trelawny, Hon. Roylan Barrett; Fire Brigade Comissioner, Laurie Williams; MP, Dr Patrick Harris, Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Lisa Wisdom and Senator Dennis Meadows.
