Medical Officer of Health for Trelawny, Dr. Marcia Johnson-Campbell, is refuting claims by Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for North Trelawny, Dennis Meadows that the Clark's Town Health Centre has been operating without a midwife for the last five years.
"There is a midwife at the Clark's Town Health Centre as we speak," said Dr. Marcia Johnson-Campbell.
"Her name is Ms. Anne McLeod. She is a public health nurse, and also a trained midwife."
According to Dr. Johnson Campbell the regular services are still being offered at the facility, except for the delivery of babies.
"Nurse McLeod did deliveries up until 2003, but because of low usage by the citizens, who prefer to deliver at hospitals, the decision was taken to phase out delivery," Dr. Johnson-Campbell added.
But Meadows, who is also the JLP deputy general secretary, in a release, contends that it is a gross inconvenience to the communities that depend on the facility, especially the expectant mothers, as they have to travel more than 10 miles to the Falmouth Hospital.
"Clark's Town being a satellite community outside of Falmouth, residents have to travel miles to the Falmouth Hospital, consequently posing serious risk of delivery during transit and added financial costs," he maintained.
The health centre serves eight communities in and around Clark's Town.
