Hopewell High - changing the educational landscape in Hanover
Claudine Housen
(Apr-29-2007)

WESTERN BUREAU-

One of the new schools constructed under the North Western School Programme, Hopewell High School in Hanover, is rapidly positioning itself as one of the schools of choice in the region.

Having just opened it doors last September, the school already has a student count of 400, 22 staff members, and boasts a variety of state of the art equipment.  None of this however compares to its vibrant Parent Teachers Association (PTA). “Our PTA meeting are formalized with programmes and our parents are actively involved,” said principal Joyce Irving. “On average we have a 70 per cent attendance.”

Noting that the school’s motto is: ‘Pioneers for Excellence’, Mrs. Irving said that although the plant was still in it is embryonic stages; it has received tremendous support from the community and corporate society.

“Through the instrumentality of Ms. Kirsten Rausing, the school will receive equipment valued at $450,000 in addition to ten computers. Also, we now have a telephone service- three lines- thanks to the Try all Fund,” she said.

“We are also getting help from the church community…This is an example of the mark the school is making on the community, to be getting so much help in the embryonic stage of the institution.”

A former principal at one of the early childhood institutions in the parish, Mrs. Irving said that the school is committed to a multi-faceted approach to both teaching and learning.

“Our school’s development plan is not individual,” she explained. “All the stakeholders are involved. The school motto, everything that has been decided on has come out of a group, including student representatives.”

“We want to shape the culture of excellence in this institution and this is evidenced in our team approach to everything that we do.”
