Harmony Hall is a rich historical treasure
(Mar-04-2003)

Harmony Hall restaurant

Harmony Hall Art Gallery, Craft shop, boutique and restaurant in Tower Isle represents one of the rich historical treasures and legacy that abounds in St. Mary.

Built in the nineteenth century of stone and daub, it once housed a Methodist manse, but was closed for a period of time. The present owners are Annabella and Peter Proudlock. It was discovered and bought in 1980 by Annabella and Graham who did a year of renovation and remodelling. The beautiful fret-work which adorns the verandah of the two-storey building was the main feature of the renovation. The rooms were also remodelled. Since the opening in 1981 both local and overseas visitors have been attracted to view the works produced by renowned artists and intuitives. Harmony Hall has since received international acclaim from the public and the media.

The front gallery showcases the best of Caribbean art while displays of original prints by some of Jamaica's finest artists show bold expression to delicate water colours in the back gallery. Paintings hung in the Intuitive room reveal the creativity of Jamaica's artists and their paintings are always in the highlight of a series of winter season shows mounted at the gallery. These are held on selected Sundays starting at 12 noon. No entrance fee is charged and cocktails are served courtesy of Appleton V/X rum. The shows bring together artists as extraordinary as their creations.

Annabella’s interest in art before ownership of Harmony Hall developed while she lived in Kingston where she painted Christmas cards. She was exposed to and met some of Jamaica's finest artists then, and after discovering Harmony Hall it was turned into a vested interest. There was no turning back since this move, and after a twenty-two year stint of mounting exhibits of world famous artists and intuitives the gallery has become famous. Craftwork is also given similar promotions.

Special tribute was paid to the owners by the intuitives at their annual show on December 29th. They expressed appreciation, gratitude and love for the promotion they have gotten over the 22 years. This exposure has extended world-wide as prints are purchased by overseas visitors. Pottery by famous potters such as Cecil Baugh and Lloyd Morris of Tower Isle enjoys the same promotions as the art works.

The Harmony Hall team has extended business to Antigua since 1987 where shows are held on a regular basis. The concept has received an equally enthusiastic response. Harmony Hall is fulfilling its avowed intention to introduce to a wider audience the secret delights of Jamaica through art and craft.
