SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Cultural judging for Best Scheme Competition continues across the island
Another competition which is now taking place across the island, is the NHT’s Best Schemes Competition. So far, the judging team has travelled across the western region of Jamaica to visit various communities in Trelawny, Hanover, St. James, St. Elizabeth and Manchester for the cultural aspect of the competition. Mr. Lenworth Black, NHT’ s social development officer who coordinated the western leg of the competition, said that although all schemes were not fully prepared for judging, the majority put on a good show: “We were overawed by the presentation of culinary art work in some schemes. Some even showed some very colonial items like mugs. It was clear that there were persons who were enthused about participating in the competition,” Mr. Black said.
Likewise Mrs. Khummit Keshinro, senior social development officer who was the coordinator for the St. James leg of the competition, expressed her enthusiasm about the cultural judging.“It was beautiful. The presentations were well done and the displays all showed a lot of creativity.”
The competition which is being organized by the NHT’s Social Development Department, is part of the NHT’s efforts to encourage civic pride by rewarding communities that use their initiative to implement projects that improve the cultural, health, environmental; and educational aspects of community life. NHT Scheme entrants are vying for prizes at the Parish, Regional and National levels of the competition. Winners and their runners- up stand to win just under $3m in prize monies which will be shared at the regional and national levels.
